Peter both encourages us and tells us not to be surprised by persecution that comes our way. However, he differentiates and tells us to rejoice “to the degree” our sufferings are because of our testimony for Christ. He implies that our sufferings could have other causes. Peter says, “If there’s going to be a target on your shirt, let it be for Christ alone.”
